Hi guys,
Many of you must wonder, how can l earn points with the Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) program – this is the definitive guide, and will ensure that you can earn the maximum amount of points possible, so you can fly in luxury sooner rather than later!
- Banking (credit cards!)
- The easiest way to earn QFF points! All major banks in Australia offer credit cards where you can earn QFF points through everyday spending. But the main way to earn A LOT of points is through maximising sign on bonuses for new cards.
You can also earn points with some transaction accounts, on home loans, and car loans.
- Flights
The second easiest way to earn points, and the main method to earn those valuable status credits (to boost your QFF status!). Every time you fly an eligible flight with Qantas, Jetstar, and their partner airlines, you will earn QFF and status credits.
Obviously, if you fly in a fancier cabin class (Premium Economy, Business and First) you get you more points, and if you buy a sale / discount fare, you get less points than you would buying a flexible fare in that cabin.
- Shopping
The main way to earn points through shopping is through Woolworths, BWS and some Caltex Woolworths food outlooks. I do a lot of my shopping with Woolies, and you can get some very valuable point offers (e.g. spend $x amount to get y number of points), which can be a nice little booster for your points balance! You can also earn points through shopping with major brands in the Qantas online mall.
Find my overview of the Qantas online mall here.
- Cars and accommodation
If you need to hire a car with Avis or Budget, then do it through Qantas! Or if you need to book accomodation, do it with Qantas Hotels or Airbnb.
- Qantas Cash
An excellent way to earn points when you travel overseas! This is a pre-paid money card that you can use either within Australia, or abroad. Once you activate it, and load it with money, then you can earn Qantas points. The earn rates aren’t that great for Australian purchases (1 point for every $4 you spend on eligible purchases in Australian dollars), but great when you use it overseas (1.5 points for every AU$1 equivalent you spend on eligible purchases in foreign currency).
There is the added feature that you can lock in exchange rates before you travel (downside is that exchange rates move against you while on holidays – but personally, l would rather just lock in rates and forget about while you are on holidays!), load Australian dollars and spend in any currency worldwide, get access to your money immediately with instant load, and no monthly account fees. I use this all the time when l travel, given the benefits and the convenience!
Though l would caution there are some risks associated with Qantas Cash, given you are loading cash into, rather than it being linked to a bank account. Risks include you may be liable for unauthorised transactions (so quickly call Qantas Cash if your card is stolen), there is no interest paid on amounts sitting in the card, and counterparty risk (that is, this is not a deposit, so you don’t get protection under the Financial Claims Scheme, and you may lose all / part of your remaining balance in the event of an insolvency of the issuer.
- Insurance
QFF has a program called “Qantas Assure” which rewards you points when you sign up for health / life / travel insurance. You also get rewarded points for everyday activities (such as walking) through the Qantas Assure app.
- Food and Wine
Next time you are going out with friends, make sure you book through Qantas Restaurants (plenty of amazing restaurants to try out!), or get your food delivered with Deliveroo, or have some lovely wines through Qantas epiQure.
- Phones
If your preferred carrier is Vodafone, sign up to one of their Qantas Red plans, and get plenty of points from Vodafone!
